The Social Welfare Department of Tamil Nadu, India has presented the Best Transgender Award to Sandya Devi of Kanyakumari on Monday.
This accolade honors transgender individuals who inspire others and actively engage in social causes. The award also comes with a cash prize of 1 lakh which is roughly $1700. The award is part of the Tamil Nadu government’s ongoing efforts to recognize and celebrate transgender people. Chief Minister M K Stalin presented the award to Devi.
Devi is a flower vendor from Thovalai in Kanyakumari. She has conducted over 1,000 bow-song (villu paatu) performances, a traditional form of musical storytelling, to raise awareness on critical issues such as COVID-19, the dangers and consequences of dowry harassment, and violence against women.
Through her art, she has made a substantial impact on her community. By using her platform, she has reached a diverse audience and proved that spreading awareness can be done in creative ways.
By celebrating the achievements of trans individuals like Sandya Devi, the government of Tamil Nadu hopes to inspire others to contribute to social causes and work towards a more understanding and compassionate world.
