Alex Consani, the 2024 “It Girl,” has made history as the first trans woman nominated for Model of the Year at the British Fashion Council’s Fashion Awards.

Consani, known on TikTok as @captincroook with over three million followers, has gained attention both on social media and in the fashion industry.

Consani is no newbie. She began her career in 2015 and became the youngest trans model to join an agency at 13 with Slay Model Management.

The BFC announced the 2024 Fashion Awards nominees on Tuesday, August 20, naming Consani as a contender for Model of the Year. The awards will be held on December 2 at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

Last year, non-binary model Kai-Isaiah Jamal, who came out as a trans man in 2014, was nominated for the same award. Danish model Mona Tougaard, who identified as part of the LGBTQ+ community in a 2023 Vogue Scandinavia interview, was also a nominee.

The Model of the Year award recognizes a model who has had a significant impact globally over the past year. The BFC describes it as someone who has influenced the industry beyond just runway shows.

Consani fits this description well. Since her runway debut for Tom Ford in 2021, she has appeared in major fashion shows and made a noticeable impact in the fashion world. Her nomination highlights her achievements and the ongoing changes in the industry regarding representation and inclusivity.
