In a historic win, Democrat Sarah McBride has been elected to Delaware’s at-large House seat, becoming the first openly transgender person to serve in the U.S. Congress. This milestone was called by major polling outlets after McBride’s victory over Republican John Whalen III on Tuesday, November 5.

McBride, 34, garnered 57.6% of the vote with 63% of precincts reporting, according to projections by NBC News and The New York Times. Known for her 2020 achievement as the first trans woman elected to a state senate, McBride’s win represents another breakthrough in LGBTQ+ representation in government.

Following the announcement, McBride shared her gratitude on social media, thanking Delaware voters and expressing her commitment to key issues.

“Thank you, Delaware! Because of your votes and your values, I am proud to be your next member of Congress,” she said. “Delaware has sent the message loud and clear that we must be a country that protects reproductive freedom, that guarantees paid leave and affordable child care for all our families, that ensures housing and health care are available to everyone, and that this is a democracy big enough for all of us.”

Sarah Kate Ellis, president of GLAAD, praised McBride’s achievement as “groundbreaking for the transgender community and our entire country.” She emphasized McBride’s dedication to public service, stating that her presence in Congress will highlight “the best of America.”

McBride’s election is a significant moment for transgender visibility in U.S. politics. Her victory is hope for the LGBT+ community amidst the current political climate.
