The Stonewall National Museum, Archives & Library is set to honor the talented Laverne Cox, an Emmy-Award-winning actress and prominent figure in the LGBTQ+ community. She’ll join the esteemed company of LGBTQ+ pioneers in the Standing on the Shoulders of Heroes exhibition. Renowned for her role as Sophia Burset in the popular Netflix series Orange is the New Black, Cox’s induction into the exhibit marks another milestone in her impactful career.
The exhibition, currently curated in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is on tour alongside its companion display Never Silent. From April 26 until May 7, viewers can catch a glimpse of this historic collection at the City College of New York. Cox will be formally inducted as the 16th LGBTQIA+ historic trailblazer during a live event.
Cox’s influence extends far beyond her acting credits. Over a decade ago, she made waves in the pop-culture sphere with her breakout role in the prison drama. Since then, she’s achieved numerous milestones, including gracing the cover of Time magazine as the first transgender person, a moment captured in the iconic Transgender Tipping Point issue. Additionally, Cox became the first transgender individual to have a wax figure at Madame Tussauds. Her contributions to both entertainment and advocacy continue to inspire and pave the way for future generations.
