Sir Ian McKellen was supporting a groundbreaking Shakespeare production. Last July 25, he introduced a special rehearsed reading of Twelfth Night featuring an entirely trans and non-binary cast. The performance took place at The Space Theatre in London and also streamed online for a global audience.

The event was presented by Trans What You Will, a theatre group focused on creating space for trans and non-binary performers in classic plays. Director Phoebe Kemp said Twelfth Night was a perfect fit since the story had always explored themes of identity and gender fluidity. This production aimed to turn that into a celebration of joy and authenticity.

McKellen called Twelfth Night “perhaps the funniest and most moving of Shakespeare’s plays” and said he was excited to see what this version brought to the stage. His involvement added star power to what many were calling a historic moment for theatre and LGBTQ+ representation.

The show lined up with London Trans+ Pride and was described as a joyful act of protest and creativity. Organizers hoped it challenged expectations while shining a light on the talent and resilience of trans artists.

Tickets for the live performance were pay-what-you-can, and the global livestream made it accessible for audiences everywhere. Proceeds went to Not a Phase, a UK-based charity that supported trans and gender-diverse people.

This was more than a night of theatre. It was a statement about inclusion and visibility in the arts, delivered through one of Shakespeare’s most beloved comedies.
