At the 66th Grammy Awards on the 2nd of February, Lady Gaga used her platform to speak out in support of transgender rights. After winning the award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for her collaboration with Bruno Mars on Die With a Smile, Gaga declared that transgender people are “not invisible.”
“Trans people deserve love. The queer community deserves to be lifted up. Music is love,” she said during her acceptance speech.
Gaga, who identifies as bisexual and is widely regarded as an LGBTQ+ advocate, made her remarks amid ongoing policy changes by the Trump administration that have affected the transgender community. These include restrictions on gender-affirming care for individuals under 19 and policies defining gender based on biological sex. Additionally, the administration has sought to house transgender women in men’s prisons while blocking their access to gender-affirming care, though a federal judge has temporarily halted this policy.
In a recent interview with Elle UK, Gaga reiterated her commitment to LGBTQ+ advocacy. “We will stick together. It’s going to be hard, but I’m up for it. We’re up for it. And I just want everyone to know how deeply they’re loved and not invisible,” she said.
Chappell Roan, who won Best New Artist among her six nominations, also addressed the struggles faced by LGBTQ+ individuals, particularly the transgender community. Speaking with GLAAD correspondents Chrishell Stause and Anthony Allen Ramos on the red carpet, Roan emphasized the resilience of trans people.
“Trans people have always existed and they will forever exist, and they will never, no matter what happens, take trans joy away,” she said.
Roan, who identifies as lesbian and is recognized for her advocacy within the queer community, credited trans women for their influence in the music industry. “I would not be here without trans girls, so just know that pop music is thinking about you and cares about you, and I’m trying my best to stand up for you in every way that I can.”
Roan has previously voiced concerns about political leadership, notably in a viral TikTok video where she criticized both major political parties. She expressed frustration with the Democratic Party while also refusing to endorse a presidential candidate, stating that both sides had “failed people like me and you.”
The statements from both artists underscored the ongoing discussion about transgender rights and representation in the entertainment industry.
