Israeli referee Sapir Berman made history this week by becoming the first transgender official to oversee a European match. She took charge of a UEFA Women’s U-17 qualifier between Northern Ireland and Montenegro in Belfast, marking a significant milestone in football officiating. UEFA confirmed that Berman’s appointment was the first of its kind in European football, with the possibility of her achievement being historic on a global scale as well.

Berman has been a referee for 14 years and is widely regarded as one of Israel’s top officials. She has officiated in the country’s Premier League and recently earned her international badge. Reflecting on the moment, she described it as “a dream come true” and an opportunity to continue working in the sport that has shaped her life.

Her achievement highlights the growing representation of transgender officials in football. Seven years ago, Lucy Clark became the first transgender woman to referee a match in the FA Women’s National League. Now, Berman’s success on the international stage further reinforces the importance of inclusivity in the sport.
