Nava Mau, the talented actress from Baby Reindeer, has made history with her recent Emmy nomination.

On Wednesday, Mau was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, making her the first Latina trans woman to achieve this honor. She shares the nomination with co-star Jessica Gunning, as well as Dakota Fanning (Ripley), Lily Gladstone (Under the Bridge), Aja Naomi King (Lessons in Chemistry), Diane Lane (Feud: Capote vs. The Swans), and Kali Reis (True Detective: Night Country).

Mau’s role as Teri in the popular Netflix series marks the first time a trans woman has been recognized in this Emmy category. Baby Reindeer tells the story of Donny Dunn, a struggling comedian played by series creator Richard Gadd, who meets a lonely woman named Martha (Gunning) at the bar where he works. What starts as a kind gesture of offering her a cup of tea soon spirals into a dangerous situation when Martha is revealed to be a serial stalker. Mau’s character, Teri, becomes a love interest for Donny.

Reflecting on her nomination, Mau shared that she had been crying tears of joy for 45 minutes. She expressed that this recognition is proof that trans actors can exceed expectations when given the right opportunities.

“For trans actors we just don’t get a lot of opportunities to develop our craft, grow as artists, and to be recognized for all that we are and all that we can be,” Mau shared.

“It has been a priceless experience being a part of this show. Every step of the way, I could feel the way the experience was transforming me, my life, and what feels possible. To be recognized by my peers in the Academy is a celebration of that transformation.”

Mau follows in the footsteps of Laverne Cox, who was the first trans woman nominated for an Emmy in 2014 for her work in Orange Is the New Black.

When asked if she hopes her success will open doors for other trans actors, Mau said,  “We can see that when trans people are given the opportunity, we will grow into it and so far beyond any expectation.”

The breakout Netflix series had a big day at the Emmys, racking up 11 nominations, including one for outstanding limited or anthology series. Final round Emmy voting starts on August 15 and ends on August 26. ABC will broadcast the 76th Emmy Awards live on Sunday, September 15.
