Transgender Awareness Week this year will take place from November 13 to 19. To celebrate this event, a four-way crossing at the junction of Tavistock Place and Marchmont Street in Camden, UK with the colors of the trans flag has been unveiled.
The crossing is only the second one in all of the United Kingdom and sports the traditional transgender flag colors of blue, pink, and white. Prior to this project, there were four Rainbow crossings installed in Camden High Street in 2020 to celebrate Pride month.
The council in charge of installing the crossings has ensured that these are safe. A full Equality Impact Assessment and a Road Safety Audit were done prior to the installation. The council also made sure to discuss the accessibility of the crossing with Transport for All and the Royal National Institute of Blind People.
Each year, between November 13 to 19, people and organizations around the world participate in Transgender Awareness week so they can raise awareness on the issues transgender people face. At the end of the week is Transgender Day of Remembrance on November 20, where people and organizations honor the memory of trans people whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence that year.
The Camden trans crossing is just one of the many projects around the world to show that trans people are not alone in their journey and that the community cares about them.
