Marlon Wayans recently shared a significant change in his family during an interview on The Breakfast Club. The 51-year-old comedian opened up about his oldest child’s transgender journey, expressing, “I have a daughter that transitioned into a son. My daughter Amai is now Kai.”
Acknowledging the challenges many parents face in similar situations, Wayans revealed that dealing with this revelation has been tough for him. However, he found humor in it, calling it “one of the best, funniest hours [of comedy] I could ever imagine” for an upcoming special.
Wayans spoke highly of Kai, describing them as “brilliant” and “the most well-read, the smartest Wayans.” Despite acknowledging his imperfections as a parent, he emphasized his love and efforts, stating, “They know I love them. They see me trying, and I’m happy, but I have to respect their wishes.”
Discussing his experience as a parent and his plans for an upcoming comedy special, potentially titled “Rainbow Child,” Wayans detailed his personal journey from ignorance and denial to complete unconditional love and acceptance. He hopes that sharing his story will help other families navigating similar situations. Apart from Kai, Wayans also has a 21-year-old son, Shawn, with ex Angelica Zachary.
In his current special, “Good Grief,” Wayans delves into the pain of losing over 30 loved ones, including his father, Howell Wayans, in the last three years. Now, he emphasizes the importance of allowing his kids, including Kai, to “be free” and encourages them to embrace their true selves. Wayans believes that understanding oneself is key to happiness and wants his children to face the world with confidence and authenticity.
