Prime Video’s new docu-series In Transit premiered on June 13, and it is quickly making waves for its honest look at transgender and non-binary life in India.

Created by Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti under the Tiger Baby banner and directed by Ayesha Sood, the series follows nine people from different parts of the country. Their stories range from a classical musician in Bengaluru to a school teacher in Tripura and a corporate professional in Mumbai. Each episode touches on identity, family, love and the search for belonging.

The team spent over a year and a half earning the trust of the participants before filming began. There were long conversations, video calls and face-to-face meetings. The idea was to give people the space to tell their own stories rather than turning them into symbols.

Critics have praised the series for its warmth and authenticity. Many describe it as deeply human and refreshingly free from sensationalism. The camera feels more like a companion than an observer, allowing the audience to step into these lives without judgment.

Some of the standout stories include Madhuri Sarode, the first trans woman in India to marry openly; Aryan Somaiya, a psychologist whose own journey reflects the challenges of self-acceptance; and Patruni Sastry, a gender-fluid drag artist balancing art, activism and parenthood.

In Transit doesn’t just show the struggles. It celebrates joy, ambition and everyday life, reminding viewers that trans stories are as layered and relatable as any other.

Director Ayesha Sood says the goal was to share these experiences in a way that sparks conversations and builds understanding.

Released during Pride Month, the series is already being called a milestone in queer storytelling in India. It invites people to look beyond labels and see the humanity in every story.
