Trans Pride Brighton has received £121,278 in funding to help keep its community centre running for the next five years.

The grant comes from The National Lottery Community Fund’s Reaching Communities programme. It will help cover essential costs such as rent, utilities and volunteer training, giving the organisation more financial security through 2031.

The Trans Pride Centre is a dedicated space for trans, non-binary and gender-diverse people in Brighton. It serves as a base for Trans Pride Brighton and is used for community activities, meetings and support. The centre also stores equipment used for the organisation’s annual Pride event.

Trans Pride Brighton said the centre is a “beacon of visibility” for the local trans and non-binary community.

The new funding will also allow the organisation to focus on rebuilding some of the services it had planned when it first opened the centre. This includes bringing back regular opening hours and developing more grassroots support for the local community.

For the organisation’s volunteer committee, the grant means less pressure over basic running costs and more freedom to focus on its wider work.

Trans Pride Brighton has organised its annual Pride event since 2013. What started as a relatively small gathering has grown into one of the UK’s biggest events focused specifically on trans rights and visibility, attracting thousands of people each year.

But the organisation’s work goes beyond the annual celebration. Having a permanent community centre gives trans and non-binary people a place to meet, connect and access support throughout the year.

The £121,278 grant provides some welcome stability at a time when many LGBTQ+ organisations and community spaces are facing financial challenges.
