Nepal buzzed with news of a beauty pageant exclusively for transgender women. Simran Sherchan, representing the Blue Diamond Society (BDS), shared the scoop at a press briefing in Kathmandu last Saturday. Held on May 16, the event aimed to empower sexual and gender minority women by providing them with a platform to showcase their talents and skills.
Noteworthy was the fact that this pageant coincided with the International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT), observed globally on May 17. This year’s theme, ‘No one left behind: equality, freedom, and justice for all,’ added extra significance to the occasion, emphasizing the importance of inclusivity and human rights.
Taking place at Kathmandu’s Rastriya Naachghar, the competition featured 19 contestants competing for the top prize of Rs 100,000 in cash. Runners-up were also rewarded, with Rs 75,000 for the first runner-up and a certificate plus cash prize for the second.
But the excitement didn’t end there. The winner had the chance to represent Nepal in a transgender beauty pageant in Bangkok, Thailand—a fantastic opportunity for broader recognition and acceptance.
To ensure participants were ready for the spotlight, they underwent a 15-day training program covering everything from building their skills to developing their personalities.
