On October 2, Brazil voted for the country’s president with no winner. The top two candidates, Jair Bolsonaro and Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will advance to the next round on October 30. Jair Bolsonaro, the current president, is notably anti-LGBT. Despite their current president’s views, voters elected two transgender women to Congress.

One of the candidates is Erika Hilton, a black trans woman advocating for LGBTQ+ rights, and improving social housing and education in the country.

The other transgender woman candidate elected was Duda Salabert, a member of the Democratic Labor Party. Salabert is a councilwoman representing the state of Minas Gerais. She expressed that she had the most votes in the history of their state.

This isn’t the only victory in the Brazilian elections. 18 candidates who are part of the LGBTQ+ won their elections, including Fabio Felix, a gay member of the Socialism and Liberty Party.

These victories are big considering the hostility against members of the LGBTQ+ by their current president.
